Mr. Monroe "Moe" B. England

Monroe “Moe” B. England, Jr., 90, of 235 Walker Street, died Tuesday morning August 3 at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center. Mr. England is survived by his daughter Elizabeth P. England and her husband Tony Scott of New York City as well as two grandchildren, Olivia “Liv” Beatrice England Scott and Cameron Nash England Scott; stepdaughter Sue Stephens and her husband George Stephens, and stepdaughter Wendy Bachrach; and step grandchildren David Shaw, Lauren Fortin and Daniel Shaw. His wife Elise V. England predeceased him on October 12, 2017. Born in Pittsfield November 20, 1930, the son of Monroe Benjamin England, Sr. of Pittsfield, MA and Isabel Geisenberger England of Natchez, MS, Moe was a graduate of Berkshire School and later earned his Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University where he was a member of Delta Upsilon. Mr. England was a US Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. His family founded England Brothers Department Store in 1857. When his father died of a heart attack, Moe inherited a co-owner-operator stake in Kelly-Dietrich, a Pittsfield beer, wine and spirit distributor, and then, with his wife Elise V. England, he started the eastern branch of the craft beer company Merchant du Vin. An all-sport athlete who never met a person or party he didn’t like, Moe was known for his affable personal style. He loved people and could listen for hours to their stories. A true entrepreneur and problem-solver, Moe loved to connect people and help them -- and their children -- succeed and be happy. Over the years, he was a board member and/or supporter-member of many iconic Berkshires organizations, including Berkshire Bank, Berkshire Music School, Barrington Stage, Temple Anshe Amunim, Pittsfield Country Club, Stockbridge Country Club, Berkshire Theatre Group, Tanglewood, among others. He was also a co-owner of the storied Music Inn. A graveside funeral service for Mr. Monroe “Moe” B. England, Jr. will take place on August 31, 2021 at 11am at the Pittsfield Cemetery in the England family plot. All are welcome and are asked to please gather inside the main gate at 203 Wahconah Street prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Moe’s honor to The Mount, Barrington Stage or the England/Scott Family Fund at the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
